When learning to play the piano, or really any instrument, you want to start playing songs. In order to play songs you need to know that songs are made up of chords and melodies. It may come as a surprise but you can play a very large number of songs with just four chords. What I hope to accomplish here is to let you know that you can get started playing almost any song with these four most important chords.
What are the Four Most Important Chords?
When playing Christian music you will find a commonality between the chords. You have the I chord, the IV chord, the V chord and the VI minor chord. Maybe that does not make any sense to you. Let’s talk about the four most important chords in a specific key.
In the key of C we have the notes, C, D, E, F, G, A, B and C again. Well, we can also number each on of these scale degrees starting with 1 and so forth. So the I chord is C, the IV chord is F, the V chord is G and the VI minor is A minor.
Really?
Yes, it really is that simple. With the four most important chords you can start playing any number of praise and worship music. Let me use a song as an example. In the song “How He Loves Us” the chord progression is, I, VI, V, IV. Or, written in the key of C it is: C, A minor, G, F. And that is it. The entire song repeats this chord progression. From the beginning to the end.
There are an endless number of examples of songs that can be played with just the four most important chords. If you wanted to transpose the song above to the key of G what would the chords be? They would be G, E minor, D and C. Remember that the I of the key of G is G, the VI is E minor, the V is D and the IV is C.
